Women of Surfing: Art & History July 22 – September 2, 2017
The Huntington Beach Art Center is celebrating women in the arts with three exhibitions that showcase locally, nationally, and internationally recognized female artists. Women of Surfing: Art & History is the second exhibition in a series celebrating women in the arts, delving into artworks by national and international artists who have an intimate relationship with the ocean and the sport of surfing. Entertainment will be provided by singer/songwriter Jamisen Jarvis.
“This show was particularly special given the international scope and the focus on women in the surf photo and art community. Women have a valuable and unique perspective to contribute to the culture that has been mostly ignored by the commercial surf industry. I hope to see our collective voice continue to thrive and ultimately share a more complete picture of what surf culture is all about.”
- Sachi Cunningham (Big-wave photographer & documentary filmmaker)
"Thank you to the Huntington Beach Art Center and Surfing Heritage & Culture Center for a phenomenal exhibition opening. Also, to Phil Roberts for curating one of the most incredible shows, honoring womens art, history and surfing. I am so humbled to be apart of such a monumental and powerful exhibition, alongside so many talented women, from all around the world." -Carena Phillips

"YUAN": by Beili Liu
"YUAN: by Beili Liu," the current installation work at the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, is the inspiration for choreographer Mitsuko Horikawa and composer John Chow Seymour. Around "YUAN," they present "Tomoe," their collaborative performance work.
"Yuan," in Chinese, has several meanings including circle. The Japanese character, Tomoe, refers to a design with three elements within a circle. In this performance, three UH dance students move within and around the circular installation piece "YUAN" accompanied by the improvised acoustic and electronic music of UH music students.
